About UK import duty & VAT
- Where do the duty and VAT rates come from?
- Directly from the official HMRC Trade Tariff (the UK government’s own service). You search and confirm your commodity code, and we show the live third-country duty, any preferential rates, and the import VAT for that code. Rates change, so the result is stamped with the date it was retrieved — always confirm with HMRC or your customs agent before you import.
- How is landed cost worked out?
- Customs value (CIF) is the goods plus freight and insurance to the UK border. Import duty is the duty rate applied to that value. Import VAT is charged on the customs value plus the duty. Landed cost is goods + freight + duty + VAT. Import VAT is normally reclaimable if your business is VAT-registered.
- What is a preferential rate?
- If your goods originate in a country the UK has a trade agreement with (the EU, CPTPP members, developing countries under DCTS), a reduced or zero duty rate may apply — but only if you hold valid proof of origin. Without proof, the standard “third country” rate applies, so we use that by default and let you switch.
- Do I need the exact commodity code?
- Yes — the duty depends on it. Search by description to find candidates and pick the closest, or paste your 10-digit code. Classification is a legal decision; if you’re unsure, confirm with HMRC (an Advance Tariff Ruling is free) or a customs agent. We never classify goods for you.
- Is anything stored?
- No. Everything runs in your browser; the only call is to the public HMRC tariff service to fetch rates. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere else.
