About CBM & chargeable weight
- What is CBM?
- CBM is cubic metres — the volume of your shipment. For each item, CBM = length × width × height (in metres); for boxes measured in centimetres, multiply the three sides and divide by 1,000,000, then by the quantity. It’s the number freight is quoted and loaded by.
- What is chargeable weight?
- Carriers charge on the greater of the actual (gross) weight and the volumetric weight, because a light but bulky shipment still fills the vehicle. This tool shows both and takes the greater as the chargeable weight.
- How is volumetric weight calculated?
- Volumetric weight = volume ÷ a divisor set by the mode: 6000 for air freight, 5000 for express/courier (with dimensions in centimetres). Road and sea usually charge by CBM or loading metres instead.
- What are loading metres (LDM)?
- Loading metres are how much of the length of a standard 2.4 m-wide trailer your goods take up on the floor. This tool estimates LDM from the footprint of your items, assuming they are not stacked — stackable goods take fewer.
- Is anything stored?
- No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.
